Allosaurus

Hello. My name is Allosaurus, a name that means 'different lizard.' My story begins in a world very different from yours, during a time you call the Late Jurassic Period. I hatched from my egg around 155 million years ago, into a warm, lush world. The land you now know as North America was my home, specifically a vast floodplain called the Morrison Formation. It was a landscape of giants. Enormous ferns unfurled on the forest floor, and towering conifer trees reached for the sky. My earliest memories are of this green, vibrant world, filled with the sounds and sights of other incredible dinosaurs who shared my home.

From a small hatchling, I began a long journey of growth. It took many years, but I eventually became a formidable predator, one of the largest of my time. I grew to lengths of up to 12 meters, my body a powerful engine of muscle and bone. My skull was large, but surprisingly lightweight, and I had two short, bony horns just above my eyes. My greatest tools were in my mouth; my powerful jaws were lined with long, serrated teeth, sharp as knives. If a tooth broke or fell out while I was eating, it was no problem—another one would soon grow in to replace it. My arms were short but strong, ending in three wickedly sharp claws that were perfect for gripping my prey.

As a fully grown Allosaurus, I stood at the top of the food chain. I was an apex predator, and my diet consisted of the massive herbivores that populated the Jurassic plains. I hunted creatures like the plate-backed Stegosaurus and sometimes even the young of the colossal long-necked Diplodocus. I was not a creature built for long chases; instead, I likely relied on ambush tactics, using the dense vegetation to hide before launching a surprise attack. Modern scientists have found evidence of my hunts. My distinct bite marks have been discovered on the fossilized bones of other dinosaurs, a clear sign of my power. While I was a solitary hunter at times, fossils suggest we may have gathered in certain areas. At a place you call the Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry, the bones of many of my relatives were found together. Scientists think a severe drought may have drawn us to the last remaining water source, a testament to the harsh realities of our world.

My world was one of giants, and I played a critical role within it. The ecosystem of the Late Jurassic was governed by a seasonal climate, with a long dry season followed by a period of intense rain. These cycles dictated everything, from where we could find water to the migration patterns of the great herbivore herds. During the dry seasons, life was a struggle for survival, but the wet seasons brought new life and abundance. As a predator, my job was to maintain the balance of this prehistoric world. By hunting the large herbivores, I helped keep their populations in check, which prevented them from overeating the vegetation and destroying the environment. Every creature had its part to play, and mine was to be the great regulator of this ancient land.

My time on Earth, however, was not infinite. My species, Allosaurus, thrived for about 5 million years, from approximately 155 to 150 million years ago. We were perfectly adapted for the world of the Late Jurassic. But planets are not static; they are always changing. As the millions of years passed, the climate began to shift, and the environment slowly transformed. The world that had been our perfect home began to disappear. This was not a sudden event but a gradual process. My kind's existence came to a natural and quiet end as the Jurassic Period itself drew to a close, making way for a new era with new creatures.

I lived during the Jurassic Period. For millions of years, my story was buried in rock, waiting to be told. It wasn't until 1877 that a paleontologist named Othniel Charles Marsh discovered my bones in Colorado and gave me my name, Allosaurus. Since then, many more of my kind have been unearthed. One of the most famous is a nearly complete skeleton found in 1991, nicknamed 'Big Al.' His bones told a remarkable story of a difficult life, showing evidence of numerous injuries and infections that he had survived and healed from. Through fossils like his, you have learned so much about how I lived, hunted, and persevered. Though I walked the Earth so long ago, my story continues to inspire wonder and helps you understand the incredible, long history of life on our planet.
