The story

A Day in the Life of an Allosaurus

Hello! My name is Allosaurus, and my name means 'different lizard.' I lived a very, very long time ago, during a time called the Late Jurassic Period. That was about 150 million years ago! My home was in North America. It wasn't like it is today. It was warm and filled with giant, leafy ferns and trees that stretched way up to the sky. The air smelled like damp earth and green plants, and dragonflies as big as birds zipped past my nose. It was so exciting to be one of the biggest and strongest dinosaurs around. I loved stomping through the forests and feeling the ground shake with every step. I was a king in my own world, a powerful hunter exploring my ancient home.

Let me tell you what I looked like. I had a very big and strong body, perfect for a top hunter. I walked on two powerful back legs that helped me run super fast when I was chasing my dinner. To keep from wobbling, I had a long, heavy tail that swung behind me. It was my secret to staying balanced! Right above my eyes, I had two small, bumpy horns. They made me look extra fierce. I was a carnivore, which means I only ate meat. My favorite thing to do all day was hunt. My mouth was my best tool. It was full of long, sharp teeth, like little daggers. And guess what? If one of my teeth ever fell out, a new one would grow right back in its place. This was very helpful because I hunted other big dinosaurs for my meals, like the Stegosaurus with its big plates and spiky tail. When I spotted one, I would burst out and run as fast as my strong legs could carry me. Being a hunter was how I survived in my Jurassic home.

I lived during the Jurassic era, and my time on Earth is now over. But my story didn't end there. Many millions of years later, in the year 1877, a scientist named Othniel Charles Marsh made an amazing discovery. He found my very old bones buried in the ground. He was the one who studied them and gave me my special name, Allosaurus. Because of his discovery, my adventure continued in a new way. Today, you can see my giant skeletons standing tall in museums all around the world. When you look up at my big frame, you can imagine what my world was like. By studying me, scientists learn all about prehistoric life. I am remembered as a top predator who helped keep the Jurassic world healthy and in balance.
