Just want Blue-footed Booby?
Hi there! My name is a little silly—I’m a Blue-footed Booby! My name comes from the Spanish word ‘bobo,’ which means clown, probably because I can be a bit clumsy when I walk on land. But in the air and water, I'm a superstar! I live on sunny, rocky islands in the Pacific Ocean, and my favorite home is the famous Galápagos Islands. It’s the perfect place to fly, fish, and show off my amazing feet.
Have you seen my feet? They are my best feature! They aren't just blue; they are a super bright, brilliant, beautiful blue! The color comes from special pigments in the fresh fish I love to eat, like sardines. The healthier I am, the brighter my feet get. When I want to find a partner, I don't sing a song; I do a dance! I lift one blue foot high in the air, then the other, strutting around to show them off. It’s my way of saying, 'Look at my fantastic feet!'.
When I’m hungry, I look for my lunch from way up in the sky. I soar high above the shimmering ocean, searching for schools of tasty fish swimming below. Once I spot them, I fold my wings back and—WHOOSH!—I dive straight down into the water like an arrow. I can hit the water at super-fast speeds! It’s called plunge-diving, and it’s how I catch my dinner. Don't worry, my head has special air sacs that act like a built-in helmet to keep me safe during my high-speed dives.
I don't build a nest with twigs and leaves like other birds. My nest is much simpler, but just as cozy. My partner and I find a nice, clear spot on the ground and make a circle around it with our own poop! It might sound strange, but it creates a perfect boundary to keep our eggs safe. We usually lay one to three eggs right in the middle. We don’t sit on them to keep them warm; instead, we use our big, warm, webbed feet to cover them gently until our fluffy white chicks are ready to hatch.

Living here in the Galápagos is a wonderful adventure. As a plunge-diver, I help keep the ocean healthy and balanced by making sure there aren't too many of one kind of fish. Every part of my ocean home is connected, from the tiniest fish to a big bird like me. Taking care of my chicks, dancing with my bright blue feet, and soaring over the waves—this is the life of a Blue-footed Booby, and I wouldn't have it any other way. My feet help me dance, swim, and keep my babies warm, proving that they are the most useful shoes in the world!
