The story

A Song from the Sea

Hello from the water. My name is Cetacean. That is a big word for whales, dolphins, and porpoises. I have a very big family. We all live in the big, blue ocean. I may look like a giant fish, but I am a mammal, just like you. My home is the water, and it is where I have all my adventures.

I love to swim and play all day. I swoop and dive deep in the water. But I cannot breathe underwater. I need to come to the top for air. I do not have a nose like you do. I have a special hole on the very top of my head. It is called a blowhole. When I breathe out, all the air comes out in a big puff. It makes a big spray of water and a loud WHOOSH sound. It is so much fun to make a big splash.

My family and I love to talk to each other. We do not use words like you do. We talk by making special sounds. We make clicks and whistles and sing beautiful songs. Our songs can travel very far through the big ocean so we can always find each other. We are the singers of the sea. Our songs help make the ocean a happy and lively home for everyone who lives here.
