Just want Dinosaurs?
Hello there! We are the dinosaurs. We lived on Earth a very, very long time ago, way before there were any people, houses, or roads. Our world was full of giant ferns and tall, leafy trees. We came in all shapes and sizes. Some of us were giants who could peek over the tallest trees, while others were as small as chickens, scurrying through the underbrush. Some of us loved to munch on tasty green plants, while others were mighty hunters who ate meat.
We roamed the Earth during a special time that scientists now call the Mesozoic Era, which started over 200 million years ago. For millions of years, this whole planet was our home. We walked on every continent, even snowy Antarctica, which was much warmer back then. We hatched from eggs, just like birds and lizards do today. Our families were big and small, and we spent our days exploring, eating, and growing under the warm sun.
After we lived on Earth for a very long time, something happened that changed our world forever. A giant asteroid, a huge rock from outer space, crashed into the planet around 66 million years ago. It made the sky go dark and changed the weather. The plants couldn't get sunlight, and our world became a very difficult place for us to find food and live.
Even though we don't walk the Earth anymore, you can still learn all about us! I lived in the Mesozoic Era. Much later, in the year 1842, a scientist named Sir Richard Owen gave us our name, 'dinosaur,' which means 'terrible lizard.' Today, people find our bones, which are called fossils, buried deep in the ground. They carefully dig them up and put our skeletons together in amazing museums, so you can see just how incredible we were. We are a special part of Earth's story, reminding everyone of the amazing life that came before.
