The story

A Bison's Big Comeback

Hello there! My name is Wisent, and I am a European Bison. I am the heaviest land animal in all of Europe, and I have a big, shaggy coat to keep me warm. On my head, I have two very strong horns. My home is in a beautiful, ancient forest that feels magical. I love living here with my family. For breakfast, lunch, and dinner, I enjoy eating tasty grass, crunchy leaves, and sometimes even the bark from trees. It’s a wonderful life, munching on my favorite foods and walking through the trees in my forest home.

My story wasn't always so happy, though. A very long time ago, my huge bison family roamed all across the lands of Europe. We were everywhere! But people started to hunt us too much, and slowly, our numbers became smaller and smaller. It was a very dangerous time for us, and our world got a lot smaller. Things got so bad that by the year 1927, something very sad happened. The very last one of my relatives living free in the wild was gone. For a little while, the only European Bison left in the whole world were my great-great-grandparents. They were living safely inside zoos, cared for by people. It seemed like we might disappear forever from the wild, and our forests would be empty of our footsteps.

But then, the most exciting part of my story began! Many kind people saw that we were in trouble and decided they had to help us. They worked together to make a wonderful plan. First, they made sure that all the bison living in zoos, like my great-great-grandparents, were very healthy and happy. They wanted to help them have babies so our bison family could grow again. And it worked! Then, in the year 1952, they did something truly amazing. They took some of my brave relatives from the zoos and brought them back to live in the wild Białowieża Forest. It was the very first time in many, many years that a wisent like me was able to roam free again, just like we were always meant to do. It was a new beginning for all of us.

Today, my family is growing strong and healthy again in the wild! We have a very important job to do in our forest home. You could call us the 'gardeners of the forest.' When we munch on lots of plants and walk around, we create clear paths through the trees. This helps new plants grow and makes it easier for other animals to find food and shelter. By doing our job, we help keep the whole forest healthy for everyone who lives there. My story shows that even when things look very bad, with a little help from kind people and a lot of hope, animals like me can make a big comeback. We are proof that it is never too late to make things right.
