The story

A Giant Southern Lizard's Story

Hello. My name is Giganotosaurus, which is a very big name for a very big dinosaur. It means 'giant southern lizard.' I lived about 98 million years ago, long before people were around. My home was a beautiful, warm place that you now call South America. Imagine a world filled with giant green plants, tall trees reaching for the sun, and lots of other dinosaurs walking around. The air was warm, and the ground shook when my friends and I stomped by. It was a lush, green world, and I was one of the biggest creatures in it.

I was huge. If you saw me today, you would notice that I was even longer than a bus. Because I was so big, I had a very big appetite. I was a carnivore, which means I ate meat. My favorite meals were the giant plant-eating dinosaurs that lived nearby, like the enormous Argentinosaurus. To catch such a big dinner, I needed special tools. My teeth were sharp and shaped like blades, perfect for slicing. Sometimes, when we were hunting something extra large, my family and I would hunt together as a team. Working together made it possible for us to catch the biggest plant-eaters in our world. It took a lot of teamwork to be a successful hunter.

After I was gone, my bones were buried deep under the ground for millions and millions of years. They were a secret, hidden from the world. But one day, that secret was found. On July 25th, 1993, a fossil hunter named Rubén Carolini was exploring in a place called Patagonia. He saw something amazing sticking out of the ground—it was my skeleton. He had discovered me. Thanks to him, scientists were able to dig up my bones very carefully. They studied them and learned all about me: how big I was, what I ate, and what my world was like. His discovery allowed my story to be told.

I lived during a time called the Late Cretaceous period. Even though I roamed the Earth a very, very long time ago, my story is still important. When scientists and people like you learn about my bones, you learn about the amazing world of dinosaurs. My giant skeleton helps everyone understand just how incredible and different life on Earth once was. I am a happy reminder of how big and wonderful life on our planet can be.
