The story

A Giant Salamander's Story

Hello! I am a Japanese Giant Salamander. I live in a cool, clear river in a country called Japan. My home is full of smooth, gray stones and water that rushes all around me. I am a very big salamander. If you saw me stretched out, I would be as long as a small bicycle! My skin is brown and wrinkly. It looks a little like a bumpy blanket. This special skin is very good for hiding. When I stay still at the bottom of the river, I look just like a long, lumpy rock. This helps me stay safe and hidden from anything that might bother me. It is my favorite way to rest in my wonderful water home.

I have a special secret, like a superpower! I can breathe right through my wrinkly skin. The water gives me all the air I need, so I don't have to come up to the top. It feels very nice and cool. During the sunny daytime, I like to find a big, flat rock to hide under. It is my cozy spot where I can take a long nap. When the sun goes down and the river gets dark, that is my time to wake up. I slowly crawl out from under my rock and start looking for yummy snacks to eat in the quiet water.

I am a very important helper for my river home. To find my snacks, I gobble up little fish and lots of wiggly bugs that live in the water. By eating them, I help keep the river healthy and clean for everyone. I am a good friend to my river. I help make sure it is a wonderful place for all the other creatures who live here with me. It feels good to be a river helper.
