Leafcutter Ant

Hello there. I am a leafcutter ant, and I live in the warm rainforests of the Americas. I don't live by myself. I live with millions and millions of my sisters in a giant underground city we call a colony. It's so big, it can be as large as your classroom. We have one amazing mother who rules our city. We call her the queen, and she is the mother to every single one of us. You might have seen pictures of ants like me. We are famous for carrying big, green pieces of leaves on our backs. When my sisters and I march in a long line, it looks like we are all holding tiny green umbrellas to protect us from the sun.

My most important job is to be a leaf cutter. It's a big responsibility. I have super-sharp jaws that work just like a pair of scissors. These jaws are called mandibles, and they are so strong I can snip right through a thick, tough leaf. After I cut a piece that is just the right size, I lift it over my head and start my long walk home. My sisters and I make a long parade through the forest, all of us carrying our green treasures. For a long time, people and scientists watched us march. Around the year 1804, a scientist named Johan Christian Fabricius became so curious about my family that he gave one of our main groups its special scientific name, Atta. It made us feel very important.

Now, I am going to tell you a very big secret. Are you ready? We don't actually eat the leaves we carry. I know, it sounds silly, but it's true. We are actually farmers. Deep inside our underground city, we have a special garden. When we bring the leaf pieces home, we chew them up until they become a mushy pulp, like wet paper. Then, we use this pulp to grow a special kind of fungus. This fungus is the only food our whole colony eats, from the queen to the tiniest baby ant. We all have different jobs to keep our farm running. Some of my tiniest sisters are the gardeners who carefully look after our fungus. My biggest sisters are soldier ants, and they stand guard at the entrance to our home, protecting us all from danger.

My story is almost over, but I want to tell you why my family is so important for the whole rainforest. We are not just farmers for ourselves; we are also important gardeners for our entire forest home. When we march out and snip leaves from the trees and plants, we are actually helping them. It’s like we are giving the plants a haircut, which is called pruning. This helps them grow back even stronger and healthier than before. Our huge underground nests are also very helpful. As we dig our tunnels and rooms, we mix up the soil, which lets air and water reach the roots of the plants. We are a small part of a very big world, but we work hard to keep our rainforest beautiful and strong for everyone.
