Just want Lemming?
Hello. My name is Lemming, and I want to tell you about my life in the chilly, wide-open spaces of the Arctic tundra. My home is a land of extremes. The winters are very long, with deep snow covering everything like a thick, white blanket. The wind can be quite cold, so my family and I stay warm together. We live in cozy burrows that we dig deep underground, safe from the harsh weather above. But when summer arrives, it’s a wonderful surprise. The snow melts away, and for a short time, the ground is covered with colorful flowers and green plants. It's a beautiful, busy time for us, but we always know the snow will return.
Unlike some animals you might know, I don’t hibernate and sleep through the winter. My life is an adventure all year long. When the snow is deep, I live in a secret world of tunnels right underneath it. This space between the snow and the ground is called the subnivean space, and it’s my winter highway system. It keeps me hidden from predators and protected from the freezing air. To help me dig through the packed snow and find food, I have a special adaptation. In the winter, my front claws grow longer and sharper, like tiny shovels. This helps me dig for the tasty roots and grasses that are buried under the snow, so I always have something to eat.
My family has a very interesting life cycle. Every three to four years, something amazing happens. Our population grows very, very big. Suddenly, there are so many of us that our burrows become crowded, and there isn't enough food for everyone. This is when the 'lemming boom' happens. When our community gets this large, it's time for a great journey. Many of us have to leave our homes and migrate across the tundra to find new places to live with more food. It’s a huge adventure that spreads my family all across the Arctic, making sure we can continue to thrive.
A Lemming's Life: My Story from the Tundra

It’s a huge adventure that spreads my family all across the Arctic, making sure we can continue to thrive.
Now, you might have heard a silly story about me and my family. There is a myth that during our big migrations, we all jump off cliffs together. I want you to know that this is not true at all. This incorrect story started because of a movie made in 1958 called 'White Wilderness'. The people making the movie created a false scene to make the story seem more dramatic. The truth is, we would never jump off a cliff on purpose. Sometimes, during a crowded migration, one of us might accidentally slip and fall into the water. But when that happens, we don’t panic, because we are actually very good swimmers.
My life might seem small, but I have a very big job in the Arctic. I am what scientists call a keystone species. This means that the entire tundra ecosystem depends on me to stay balanced and healthy. Many other animals, like the mighty Arctic fox and the beautiful snowy owl, rely on me as their main source of food. When my population is large, their families have plenty to eat and can raise healthy babies. My work helps more than just the animals, too. All of my digging and burrowing mixes up the soil, which helps new plants grow strong when the summer sun returns. My presence helps the whole tundra thrive.
So, my life is a story of resilience and survival in a tough but beautiful place. Being a lemming means being a vital part of a big, interconnected world where every living thing has an important role to play. From my secret tunnels under the snow to my big migrations, my actions help keep the Arctic alive. My work in the tundra is never done, and I am proud to be an important part of this amazing ecosystem.
