Just want Marsican Brown Bear?
Hello! My name is Marsican, and I am a Marsican brown bear. I want to tell you my story. My home is in a very special place: the beautiful Apennine Mountains of Italy. It’s a wonderful place filled with tall trees and sunny meadows. What makes my home extra special is that bears like me don't live anywhere else in the whole world. We are unique to these mountains. If you ever saw me, you would notice my fur is a lovely light brown color, like toasted bread. I am also a little smaller than my other bear cousins you might see in books or on TV. Even though I'm not the biggest bear, I have a very big heart and an important job to do here in my mountain home.
My favorite thing to do is look for snacks. I am an omnivore, which means I eat both plants and little creatures. I especially love to munch on sweet, juicy berries that grow on bushes all over the forest. I also dig for tasty roots in the soil and find crunchy bugs under logs. It’s like a treasure hunt every single day. While I'm enjoying my meals, I am also doing my important job as a forest gardener. You see, when I eat berries and then roam around my territory, the seeds from the berries come out in my poop. This helps plant new berry bushes and trees all over the mountains. I am helping my own home grow bigger and healthier. When the weather gets chilly and winter arrives, I find a cozy den, maybe in a cave or under the roots of a big tree, and I curl up to sleep until spring comes again.
My home has a special name: the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. It is a very old and important place that was created way back in the year 1922 to make sure that animals like me would always have a safe place to live. I am so thankful for this park. It’s a little sad, but there are not many of my kind left in the world. Right now, there are only about 50 to 60 of us Marsican brown bears. But my story is a hopeful one. Many kind people are working very hard to protect me and my family. They help make sure our forest home stays healthy and safe, so we can keep doing our job as forest gardeners. By helping us, they are also helping the whole mountain ecosystem stay strong and beautiful for everyone to enjoy.
