Abigail Adams

Hello! My name is Abigail Adams. I was born a very long time ago, in the year 1744. When I was a little girl, I loved to read books more than anything. I did not go to a schoolhouse like you might, but I learned so much from reading all the books in my family's library. I grew up and married a wonderful man named John Adams. He had big, important ideas about starting a new country where people could be free and happy.

My husband, John, was often away from our home, working hard to help create the United States of America. I missed him very much, so I wrote him letters. I wrote hundreds and hundreds of letters! In my letters, I told him all about our children and our farm. I also shared my own ideas with him. In one famous letter from 1776, I asked him to please 'Remember the Ladies' when making new rules for the country. I believed everyone, boys and girls, should be treated fairly.

Later on, my husband John became the second president of the United States! That made me the First Lady. We were the very first family to live in a special new home called the White House. It was a very exciting time. One of our sons, John Quincy Adams, even grew up to be a president, too! I lived to be 73 years old and passed away in 1818. Today, people remember me for my smart letters and for always speaking up for what I believed was right.
