Alexander the Great and the Hellenistic Age

Hello, my name is Alexander, and I was a prince from a kingdom called Macedon. I was born a very long time ago, in the year 356 BCE. When I was a boy, I met a beautiful, strong horse named Bucephalus. Everyone thought he was too wild to be ridden, but I noticed something special. I saw that he was just scared of his own shadow on the ground. So, I gently turned him toward the sun so he couldn't see it anymore. After that, he trusted me completely. I was the only one who could ride him, and Bucephalus became my best friend. He was my trusty steed and we went on all of my adventures together.

I was very lucky to have a wise teacher named Aristotle. He taught me all about the world, from the stars in the sky to the plants on the ground. He also taught me about science and poetry, and I loved learning everything I could. My father was King Philip II, and he was a very strong and brave leader. I learned a lot from watching him. When my father passed away in the year 336 BCE, it was my turn to become the new king. I was only 20 years old, and I knew I had a very big job to do for my people in Macedon.

As king, I wanted to see the world. In 334 BCE, I began a great journey leading the Macedonian army. My goal was to explore lands far to the east. One of those places was the huge Persian Empire, which was ruled by a king named Darius III. We traveled for a very long time, seeing incredible new places and meeting different people. We visited the amazing land of Egypt, where the people welcomed me as their leader. I liked it there so much that in 331 BCE, I decided to build a brand new city. To make sure everyone remembered who started it, I named it Alexandria, after myself. It became a beautiful place for people to live and learn.

My biggest dream was not just to win battles, but to bring people from different parts of the world together. I wanted everyone to share their ideas and learn from one another. I encouraged my Greek soldiers to talk with the people from Persia and other lands we visited. They shared their food, their music, and their stories. This created a wonderful mix of cultures that we now call the Hellenistic Age. I founded many new cities just like Alexandria so they could be special centers where people could trade goods and share knowledge with each other.

My amazing journey came to an end in the city of Babylon in the year 323 BCE. I lived to be almost 33 years old. Even though my time was short, the ideas I helped spread and the cities I built lasted for hundreds and hundreds of years. People still remember me today for my great adventure across the world and for my dream of bringing different cultures closer together.
