Andrew Johnson: A Story of a President
Hello! My name is Andrew Johnson. When I was a little boy, I lived in a small log cabin in a place called North Carolina. My family didn't have much money, but we had each other. I did not get to go to school. Instead, I learned how to be a tailor. A tailor is someone who sews and fixes clothes. I loved working with my hands and making things for people.
As I grew up, I moved to a place called Tennessee. I wanted to help the people in my town and make our home a better place. People saw that I wanted to help, so they chose me to be their leader. First, I helped lead my city, and then I helped lead my whole state. It was a very big job, but I always tried my best to listen to everyone and be fair.
Later, I went to Washington, D.C., to help lead the entire country. A very kind man named Abraham Lincoln was the president, and I was his vice president, which is like being his top helper. It was a very sad day when President Lincoln passed away. Because I was the vice president, it became my job to be the next president. I became the 17th president of the United States. It was a very hard time for our country, and my job was to help bring everyone back together.
I worked hard to help heal our country after a big disagreement called the Civil War. I lived to be 66 years old. Today, people remember me as the president who led the country during a very important time of healing and rebuilding.
