Antonio Vivaldi

Hello! My name is Antonio Vivaldi, and I want to tell you the story of my life in music. I was born in the beautiful city of Venice, Italy, on March 4th, 1678. It was a very dramatic day because there was a big earthquake! My father, Giovanni Battista, was a professional violinist, and he was my very first teacher. He taught me to play as soon as I could hold the instrument. Because I had bright red hair, many people in Venice gave me a nickname: 'il Prete Rosso,' which means 'The Red Priest.' I earned this name because I did become a priest in the year 1703. Even though I served the church, my greatest and truest passion was always creating and playing music.

Also in 1703, I began a wonderful job at a special place called the Ospedale della Pietà. It was a home for girls who didn't have families, and it was my job to teach them how to play instruments and sing. The girls were so talented, and I loved writing music for them. I wrote hundreds of concertos and other pieces just for them to perform. Soon, people from all over Europe heard about our amazing concerts and traveled to Venice to listen. We became famous! It was during my time at the Ospedale that I composed my most famous work, a set of four violin concertos called The Four Seasons. It was published in 1725. In this piece, I wanted to use music to paint pictures of the seasons. If you listen closely, you can hear birds singing in 'Spring,' a buzzing fly in 'Summer,' a happy harvest dance in 'Autumn,' and even teeth chattering from the cold in 'Winter.'

My music became very popular, and my name became known all across Europe. During my life, I wrote over 500 concertos. While many were for the violin, I wrote for all kinds of other instruments, too. I also wrote many grand operas, which are like plays where all the words are sung instead of spoken. My fame allowed me to travel to different cities, like Mantua and Rome, to have my music performed. My compositions were played for very important people, including kings, queens, and even the Pope. It was a very exciting life, and I felt lucky to spend it creating new sounds and sharing my love for music with the world.

As I got older, the style of music that people liked began to change, and my work wasn't as popular as it once had been. Hoping to find a new job and support myself, I moved to Vienna, Austria. Unfortunately, I became ill there. I lived to be 63 years old and passed away in Vienna in 1741. For a long, long time after that, my music was mostly forgotten. But nearly 200 years later, in the 20th century, people rediscovered my compositions. Now, my music is loved and performed by orchestras all over the world. The next time you hear the beautiful melodies of The Four Seasons, I hope you’ll remember my story and the joy I found in turning the world around me into music.
