Hello. My name is Carlos Chagas. I was born a long, long time ago, in the year 1879, in a beautiful country called Brazil. Ever since I was little, I loved learning about the world around me. When I grew up, I became a doctor. I used a special tool called a microscope to look at teeny-tiny things that our eyes can’t see. I wanted to use science to help people who were feeling sick.
One day, in the year 1909, I traveled to a small town where many people were getting sick, and no one knew why. It was a big mystery. I looked everywhere for clues. I looked at the water they drank and the food they ate. Then, I found a funny-looking little bug that liked to live in the walls of the houses. I took the bug back to my laboratory and looked at it very closely under my microscope. Inside the bug, I discovered something super tiny that was making everyone feel unwell.
Finding that little bug was so important. It helped me and other doctors understand how to help the people in the town. To remember my discovery, people named the sickness after me: Chagas disease. I lived to be 55 years old, passing away in 1934. It always made me happy to know that my work as a scientist helped families all over the world stay healthy and strong.
