Just want Christiaan Huygens?
Hello! My name is Christiaan Huygens. When I was a little boy, a long, long time ago, I loved looking up at the sparkly night sky. I was very curious and always asked questions. I wanted to know how everything worked, from the twinkling stars way up high to the ticking clocks in my house.
I built my own special telescopes so I could see things that were very, very far away. One night in the year 1655, I pointed my telescope at the planet Saturn. I saw something amazing! At first, it looked like the planet had big ears. But I kept watching it every night. I figured out it was a big, beautiful ring that went all the way around the planet. I was the very first person to understand what that beautiful ring was!
Besides looking at the stars, I loved making things. The clocks people used back then were not very good at telling the right time. So, in the year 1656, I had a wonderful idea! I made a new kind of clock with a swinging weight, which is called a pendulum. It went 'tick-tock, tick-tock' very steadily. My clock was so good that it became the best way to tell time for hundreds of years.
I lived to be 66 years old, and I never stopped being curious. My discoveries helped us understand our amazing universe, and my clocks helped people all over the world stay on time. When you see a picture of Saturn's beautiful rings, you can think of me looking up at the sky through my telescope.
