The story

Diego Rivera: The Painter of Mexico's Stories

Hello! My name is Diego Rivera, and I was a painter. I was born on December 8th, 1886, in a colorful city in Mexico called Guanajuato. Ever since I was a little boy, I loved to draw. I drew on everything—paper, furniture, and even the walls of my house! My hands were always busy creating pictures. My parents saw how much I loved art, and instead of getting mad about the drawings on the walls, they did something wonderful. They covered the walls with chalkboards and big sheets of canvas so I would have all the space I needed to draw as much as I wanted.

When I got older, I knew that being an artist was what I wanted to do for my whole life. To become the best painter I could be, I decided to travel across the big ocean to Europe in 1907. It was a very long journey. I lived in beautiful places like Spain and France, where I met other famous artists who were also creating amazing things. For many years, I spent my days studying the incredible paintings in museums and learning new ways to create my own art. This exciting adventure helped me discover my very own unique style of painting.

After learning so much in Europe, I returned home to my beloved country of Mexico in 1921. I loved my country and all the people who lived there, and I wanted to tell their stories through my art. But I didn't want to paint small pictures that would hang inside a house where only a few people could see them. I had a bigger idea. I wanted to make art for everyone to enjoy! So, I started painting giant pictures called murals right on the walls of public buildings, like libraries and schools. My murals showed the long history of Mexico, the beauty of its lands, and the lives of its hardworking people. During this wonderful time, in 1929, I also married another brilliant Mexican artist named Frida Kahlo. She also loved to share our culture through her own beautiful paintings.

I spent my whole life painting these big, beautiful stories on walls for everyone to see. It was my greatest joy to share my love for Mexico with the world. I lived to be 70 years old. Today, people from all over the world can still visit the buildings in Mexico and even in the United States to see my giant murals. I am remembered as an artist who believed that art is a special gift for everyone, not just for a few, and for sharing the powerful story of my country with the world.
