Edward Jenner: The Doctor Who Found a New Way to Be Healthy

Hello! My name is Edward Jenner. I was born in a small English town called Berkeley on May 17th, 1749. When I was a boy, I didn't play with toys very often. Instead, I loved being outside exploring nature. I watched birds fly, collected interesting fossils from the ground, and was very curious about how everything in the world worked. I was especially interested in our bodies and what makes them strong. I knew from a young age that I wanted to become a doctor so I could help people feel better when they were sick.

In my time, there was a very scary sickness called smallpox. It made people very ill. They would get a high fever and itchy spots all over their bodies. Sadly, many people who caught smallpox didn't get better. It made me very sad to see so many people suffering from this disease. As a doctor, I was determined to find a way to stop this terrible sickness and keep everyone safe and healthy.

I worked as a doctor in the countryside, and I started to notice something very interesting. The milkmaids, who were the women who milked the cows every day, often caught a mild sickness from the cows called cowpox. It just gave them a few spots on their hands, and they got better very quickly. The amazing thing was, I realized that these milkmaids never seemed to catch the dangerous smallpox! This gave me a big idea. What if having cowpox could protect people from smallpox? In 1796, I decided to test my idea. I took a tiny bit of fluid from a cowpox spot on a milkmaid’s hand. Then, I gently scratched it onto the arm of a brave young boy named James Phipps. He got a little bit sick for a day or two, but then he was perfectly fine.

A little while later, I did the next part of my test. I carefully exposed James to smallpox germs. And guess what happened? He didn't get sick at all! The cowpox had taught his body how to fight off the much more dangerous smallpox germs. My idea had worked! I called my new discovery 'vaccination,' which comes from 'vacca,' the Latin word for cow. At first, some people thought my idea was strange and were not sure about it. But soon, they saw that it saved lives. My discovery began to travel all around the world, protecting families everywhere from smallpox.

I lived to be 73 years old, and I was so happy to see my work help so many people. My discovery showed the world that we could teach our bodies how to fight off diseases before we even get sick. Today, doctors use many different vaccines to protect children and grown-ups from all kinds of sicknesses. It all started with a curious country doctor, some friendly cows, and a brave little boy.
