Just want El Greco?
Hello! My name is Domḗnikos Theotokópoulos. That’s a very long name, isn’t it? My friends gave me a nickname, El Greco. It means ‘The Greek.’ I was given that name because I was born on a beautiful Greek island called Crete. That was a long, long time ago, in the year 1541.
I loved to paint pictures. My favorite thing to use was bright, happy colors that seemed to glow. I had my very own special style of painting. I liked to make the people in my paintings look very long and tall, as if they were stretching way up high to the sky. When I grew up, I moved to a new country called Spain. Around the year 1577, I found a wonderful home in a city named Toledo, and I was so happy to paint there.
I painted for the rest of my life in my home in Toledo. I filled my pictures with swirling clouds and beautiful, glowing colors. I lived to be 73 years old, and my life ended in the year 1614. You can still see my paintings today in big buildings called museums. They are there to show everyone that it’s wonderful to see the world in your own special and unique way.
