A Story from Spain

I am a land warmed by a golden sun, with a sparkling blue sea on one side and a vast, deep ocean on the other. In the north, my body is guarded by tall, snowy mountains called the Pyrenees. My fields are dotted with ancient olive trees whose silver leaves shimmer in the breeze, and sometimes, you can see tall windmills spinning their arms against the bright blue sky. My cities are filled with ancient stones that whisper stories, walls decorated with colorful tiles that shine like jewels, and streets that echo with the beautiful sounds of guitars. Have you guessed who I am? I am a country of passion, history, and art. I am Spain!

My story begins a very, very long time ago. Around the year 218 BCE, powerful soldiers from the Roman Empire arrived on my shores. They were incredible builders, and they crisscrossed my landscape with strong stone roads, sturdy bridges to cross my rivers, and amazing aqueducts to carry fresh water to their cities. Some of these amazing structures still stand today, like silent giants remembering the past. The Romans gave me my first important name: Hispania. But their chapter ended, and another began in the year 711 CE. New people sailed from North Africa, the Moors, and they created a brilliant kingdom here called Al-Andalus. For more than 700 years, they filled my lands with knowledge, art, and science. They built breathtaking palaces like the Alhambra in Granada, with its delicate carvings and peaceful courtyard fountains. They also built magnificent mosques, like the one in Córdoba, where construction began in 785 CE. If you walk inside it, you’ll see hundreds of red-and-white striped arches that look like a forest made of stone.

For many centuries, I wasn't a single country but a patchwork of different kingdoms, each with its own ruler. That all started to change on October 19th, 1469, when a clever and powerful queen named Isabella I of Castile married a smart king named Ferdinand II of Aragon. By bringing their two large kingdoms together, they began to stitch me into the single country I am today. The year 1492 was one of the most important and busiest years in my entire life. Isabella and Ferdinand finally finished uniting all my lands under their rule. That same year, they decided to help a brave explorer named Christopher Columbus. He had a daring idea to sail west across the great Atlantic Ocean to find a new path to Asia. Isabella and Ferdinand gave him three small ships, and his journey changed the map of the world forever when he bumped into the Americas instead. This voyage kicked off my Age of Exploration, a time when my brave sailors and their mighty ships sailed to every corner of the globe, connecting worlds that had never met.

My long and exciting history has inspired some of the world's most amazing stories and art. During my Golden Age in the 16th and 17th centuries, I was home to incredible creative minds. A writer named Miguel de Cervantes wrote a book in 1605 that is still famous today. It’s about a knight named Don Quixote who imagined himself a hero and bravely fought windmills he thought were giants. Around the same time, an artist named Diego Velázquez painted pictures of my kings, queens, and their families that looked so real you felt you could almost step into the painting and talk to them. Much later, I was home to more dreamers who saw the world differently. An architect named Antoni Gaudí designed buildings in the city of Barcelona that look like they were made of melted candy and gingerbread. His most amazing church, La Sagrada Família, began construction on March 19th, 1882, and it is so detailed and grand that it is still being built today. Other painters, like Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí, created art that twisted reality and showed everyone new ways to see things.

Today, I am a vibrant country full of life. You can hear the sounds of lively fiestas in my streets, the sharp click of castanets, and the powerful, stomping rhythm of the flamenco dance. My air is filled with the delicious smell of paella cooking in wide, flat pans, and my tables are covered with little plates of food called tapas, perfect for sharing with family and friends. My people cheer loudly for their favorite soccer teams with all their hearts. My long story is written in every stone of my Roman ruins, every colorful tile in my Moorish palaces, and every bold brushstroke of my famous paintings. I am a country made of many different histories all living together to create something beautiful and new. I hope one day you’ll visit me, say 'Hola!', and add your own happy story to mine.
