Just want Empedocles?
Hello. My name is Empedocles, and I was a thinker who lived in a time called Ancient Greece. It was a long, long time ago. I was born around the year 494 BCE in a sunny Greek city called Acragas. Ever since I was a boy, I loved looking at the world around me. I would stare at the trees, the sea, and the sky and ask big, important questions. I always wanted to know how everything worked, from the smallest pebble to the biggest star.
After a lot of thinking, I came up with my most famous idea. I believed that everything in the entire world, from a buzzing bee to a tall mountain, was made from just four basic things. I did not call them elements like scientists do today. Instead, I called them my four 'roots'. These roots were Earth, Water, Air, and Fire. You can think of Earth as the soil under your feet and Water as the rain that falls from the sky. Air is the gentle wind you feel on your face, and Fire is the warm sunshine that helps plants grow. I thought that all the different things we see are just different recipes that mix these four roots together in special ways.
But I wondered, how do these roots get mixed together to build things, or how do they get pulled apart? I decided there must be two very powerful forces in the world that do this job. The first force I called Love. Love was like a big, gentle hug that brought all the roots together. It helped them combine to create people, animals, and plants. The second force I called Strife. Strife was the opposite of Love. It worked to pull the roots apart, breaking things down. But this wasn't a bad thing. It just meant the roots could be used again later to become something new.

Besides being a thinker, I was also a doctor who helped people when they were sick, and I was a poet who loved to write my ideas down in beautiful words. I lived to be about 60 years old. My idea about the four roots—Earth, Water, Air, and Fire—was one of the very first big steps in science. For thousands of years after my time, my idea helped people think about what our amazing world is made of, and that is a wonderful thing to be remembered for.
