The story

Erik the Red: A Viking's Journey

Hello. My name is Erik Thorvaldsson, but you can call me by my nickname, Erik the Red. Everyone called me that because of my bright red hair and my big, red beard. I was born in a faraway country called Norway around the year 950. When I was a boy, my family sailed across the sea to a new home on a chilly island called Iceland. Living there, surrounded by the ocean, I learned all about ships and sailing. I spent many years on the water and became a great sailor, ready for any adventure the sea would bring.

When I was a grown-up, something unexpected happened. Around the year 982, I was told that I had to leave Iceland for three years. Instead of being sad, I decided to turn this into a big adventure. For a long time, I had heard stories from other sailors about a mysterious land far to the west of us. No one I knew had ever been there, and I was curious to see it for myself. I got my best ship ready, gathered my crew, and we sailed off into the unknown waters to find this new land.

We sailed for many days and finally saw land. It was a huge island covered in ice and tall mountains. It looked cold and empty at first, but I didn't give up. I sailed along the coast, and during the summer, I found beautiful green valleys that were perfect for farms. I knew this could be a wonderful new home. I decided to call the island 'Greenland' because I thought such a friendly name would make other people want to move there with me. When my three years were over, around the year 985, I sailed back to Iceland. I told everyone about the green lands I had found, and I convinced hundreds of people to join me in starting a new home.

Our settlement in Greenland was a success, and Vikings lived there for hundreds of years after we arrived. I was also very proud of my son, Leif, because he grew up to be a famous explorer, too. I lived to be about 53 years old. Today, people remember me as a brave Viking leader who founded the first European settlement in Greenland. My story shows that you should never be afraid to explore the unknown, because you might discover something wonderful.
