Leif Erikson
Hello! My name is Leif Erikson, and I was a Norse explorer. I was born in Iceland around the year 970. My father was the famous explorer Erik the Red. When I was a boy, around 986, my father was banished from Iceland, so our family sailed across the sea to a huge, icy island. My father cleverly named it Greenland to encourage other people to join us there. I grew up strong and curious, learning how to sail our amazing longships and navigate by the sun and stars.
Life in Greenland was an adventure, but I dreamed of sailing even farther. One day, a trader named Bjarni Herjolfsson came to our settlement. He told a fascinating story about being blown off course during a storm and seeing a new, unknown land to the west—a land covered in trees! His story sparked my imagination. I knew I had to see this place for myself. I bought Bjarni's sturdy ship and began preparing for the greatest journey of my life.
Around the year 1000, with a brave crew of 35 men, I set sail west from Greenland. After many days at sea, we spotted land. The first place we found was rocky and covered in glaciers, so I named it Helluland, which means 'Land of Flat Stones.' We sailed south and found another land, this one full of forests. I called it Markland, or 'Land of Forests.' But we kept going, and finally, we found a beautiful, green place with rivers full of salmon and vines heavy with wild grapes. It was better than any story! I named this wonderful place Vinland, the 'Land of Wine.'
We decided to stay in Vinland for the winter. My crew and I built a small settlement with a large house where we could all live. We called it Leifsbudir. The winter was much milder than in Greenland, and there was plenty of timber and food. We spent our days exploring the land, gathering grapes to make wine, and cutting down trees to take back home. It felt like we were the first people to ever see this rich, new world.
When spring arrived, we sailed back to Greenland, our ship filled with timber and grapes. On the way, I rescued a shipwrecked crew, which earned me the nickname 'Leif the Lucky.' I never returned to Vinland, as I became the chieftain of Greenland after my father died. I lived a full life, and people still tell my story today. I am remembered as one of the first Europeans to reach North America, almost 500 years before Christopher Columbus. My journey shows that with courage and curiosity, you can discover whole new worlds.
