The story

Fatima al-Fihri: The Woman Who Built a University

Hello, my name is Fatima al-Fihri. My story begins a very long time ago, around the year 800, in a city called Kairouan, in what is now Tunisia. My father was a wealthy merchant, and my sister, Maryam, and I were very lucky because he believed that girls should be educated. We spent our days learning and studying. In the early 9th century, my whole family moved to a new and exciting city: Fes, in modern-day Morocco. It was a bustling place, full of new sights and sounds, and it would become the place where I would build my dream.

Life in Fes was good, but as the years passed, I faced great sadness. My dear father, my husband, and my brother all passed away. My sister Maryam and I inherited a great deal of money. We could have spent it on anything we wanted, but we knew we had a greater purpose. We wanted to give back to the community that had welcomed our family. We both decided to use our inheritance to build beautiful mosques for the people of Fes, places where they could gather, pray, and feel a sense of peace.

I had a vision for more than just a mosque. I wanted to create a place of learning, a 'madrasa,' where people could come to study and expand their minds. In the year 859, I began this enormous project. I bought a large piece of land and personally oversaw the construction every single day. I was so dedicated that I made a promise to myself to fast from sunrise to sunset every day until the work was finished. The mosque was named Al-Qarawiyyin, a special name to honor the people who, like my family, had come from my hometown of Kairouan. It was a place built with love, dedication, and hope for the future.

The madrasa I built quickly grew into something incredible. It became a place where the brightest minds could study not just religion, but also astronomy, mathematics, medicine, and languages. It wasn't just for the people of Fes; scholars and students traveled from all over the world to learn and teach at Al-Qarawiyyin. It became a shining light of knowledge. Over time, it grew into what many people today call the world's first university, and the amazing thing is that it has been open and teaching students ever since it was founded.

After seeing my dream become a reality, I lived a full life and passed away around the year 880. My real legacy is not in buildings, but in the knowledge that has been shared within their walls for over a thousand years. The University of al-Qarawiyyin still stands today in Fes, a testament to the idea that education can change the world. I am remembered as a woman who used her fortune not for herself, but to give the lasting gift of learning to countless generations.

About

A 9th-century Arab woman who is often said to have used her inheritance to start the Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque and Madrasa in 859 CE in Fes, Morocco. This school later became the University of al-Qarawiyyin, which is considered the world's oldest existing, continually operating university. However, some historians think there might not be enough proof to say for sure that she really founded it.
