Just want Gabriel García Márquez?
Hello! My name is Gabriel García Márquez, but you can call me Gabo, just like my friends and family did. I was born on March 6th, 1927, in a small town in the country of Colombia called Aracataca. When I was a little boy, I lived with my grandparents. My grandfather, the Colonel, was a wonderful storyteller who told the most amazing tales about his life and adventures. My grandmother was special, too. She saw magic in everything. To her, the world was full of wonders and strange, beautiful things happening all the time, and she helped me see them, too.
Because of the stories my grandparents told, I knew I wanted to become a writer. Their tales filled my head with ideas. When I grew up, I first started as a journalist, which means I wrote true stories for newspapers. But I still dreamed of writing my own stories, the ones from my imagination. I started to write books that mixed everyday, real life with fantastic things. People gave my style of writing a special name: 'magical realism.' It’s a way of telling a story where you might read about a regular town, but suddenly a person is followed by a cloud of yellow butterflies, or a girl is so beautiful and light that she floats up into the sky. I wanted to show how magical the world could feel.
In 1967, I finished writing my most famous book, 'One Hundred Years of Solitude.' It is a very big story about a family that lives for many, many years in a magical town that was a lot like the one where I grew up. It was full of love, adventure, and of course, a little bit of magic. People all over the world loved reading this book. It was a wonderful feeling to know my story was being shared in so many places. Then, in 1982, I received a very special award for all of my writing called the Nobel Prize in Literature. It was one of the proudest moments of my life.

I spent my life sharing stories that I hoped would fill people with wonder. I lived to be 87 years old. My books are still read today by people all over the world, and that makes me very happy. I hope my stories remind everyone to look closely at the world around them, because you might just find that it’s full of magic, too.
