Just want George Stephenson?
Hello, my name is George Stephenson. I was born a long, long time ago, on June 9th, 1781. I lived in a small cottage in England. Near my home, big steam engines puffed and chugged along, pulling coal from the mines. I loved watching them work. The chuffing sounds they made were my favorite. I dreamed that one day, I would get to work with those big, strong engines.
I did not go to school when I was a little boy. Instead, I learned all about engines by watching and helping the workers. Soon, I got a job fixing the engines when they broke. I loved making them work again. I wanted to make them even stronger and faster. I dreamed they could carry lots of things and people from one place to another. In 1814, I built my very first steam train! I was so proud. I called my new train Blücher.
Next, I will tell you about my most exciting creation! In 1829, I worked with my son, Robert, to build a special new steam engine. We named our new train the 'Rocket.' It was so fast! The Rocket was the fastest train anyone had ever seen before. It zoomed along the tracks and showed everyone how wonderful trains could be for traveling. My trains helped connect towns and cities, making it easier for people to visit each other.
I lived to be 67 years old. People remember me today as the 'Father of Railways.' They say this because my puffing steam trains changed the world. My trains made it easier for people to visit new places and see their families, bringing everyone a little closer together.
