Just want Gianni Rodari?
Hello! My name is Gianni Rodari, and I believe that imagination is the most wonderful toy in the world. I was born in a lovely town called Omegna in Italy on October 23rd, 1920. My father was a baker, and our home always smelled of fresh bread, which was a wonderful way to grow up. But a sad thing happened when I was only nine years old; my father passed away. During that difficult time, I found comfort in books and music. I would lose myself in their pages and melodies, and I spent my days dreaming up fantastical stories and worlds of my own.
When I grew up, I decided to become a teacher, and I started in 1937. I didn't want my classroom to be a boring place where children just memorized facts. I wanted it to be full of life and laughter! So, we played with words and invented silly stories together. I wanted to show my students that learning could be a joyful adventure. A few years later, the world went through the difficult time of World War II, and during those years, I saw how important it was to fight for what is right. After the war ended, I became a journalist in 1947. I wrote articles for newspapers, but my heart was always with creating stories for children.
My dream of writing for kids came true in 1951, when I published my first books. One was called 'The Adventures of the Little Onion,' and it was about a brave onion boy who stands up to a grumpy lemon prince. My stories were often funny and a little strange, filled with talking animals, upside-down worlds, and questions that made you think. In 1962, I published one of my most famous books, 'Telephone Tales.' It tells the story of a traveling father who tells his daughter a new bedtime story over the phone every single night. I loved sharing the secrets of storytelling so much that in 1973, I even wrote a book for grown-ups called 'The Grammar of Fantasy' to help them invent their own stories.

As the years went by, something wonderful began to happen. People all over the world started to read my books. It made me so happy to know my stories were traveling far beyond Italy and making children smile in different countries. Then, in 1970, I received the biggest surprise of my life! I won the Hans Christian Andersen Award. This award is like the Nobel Prize for children's books, and it is a very great honor. I was the first and only Italian ever to win it. I felt so proud that my belief in the power of imagination was being celebrated by so many people.
I passed away on April 14th, 1980, in Rome. I lived to be 59 years old. Even though I am no longer here, my stories live on. They have been translated into many languages and are read by children in classrooms and homes everywhere. I hope my books continue to inspire everyone—kids and grown-ups—to play, to imagine, and to believe that a new story is always waiting to be told.
