The story

Gianni Rodari

Hello, my name is Gianni Rodari. I was born in a lovely town in Italy called Omegna on October 23rd, 1920. My father was a baker, so our house always smelled wonderful. Even when I was very little, I loved books more than anything. I would spend hours reading and letting my mind wander to magical places. Using my imagination was my favorite game. I could turn a simple stick into a sword or a cloud into a fluffy castle in the sky. This love for stories and creating new worlds stayed with me my whole life.

When I grew up, I decided to become a teacher. I loved being around children because your minds are so full of wonder and fun ideas. I always believed that imagination is like a muscle in your body. If you use it every day, it gets stronger and stronger. I wanted to help my students exercise their imaginations every day. To do this, I started writing funny poems and silly stories for newspapers for children to read. They were so popular that in 1951, I published my very first books. One of my most famous stories from that time was called 'The Adventures of Cipollino'. It’s all about a little onion boy named Cipollino who is very brave and stands up for his friends.

My head was always buzzing with playful ideas for stories. I loved to take everyday things, like a telephone or a hat, and mix them up to make them magical and funny. What if a telephone could tell you stories? What if a hat could fly? I wrote many books filled with these kinds of silly and surprising ideas. Then, in 1970, something truly wonderful happened. I won the Hans Christian Andersen Award. This award is a very big deal for people who write for children. It is like winning a gold medal at the Olympics, but for storytelling. I was so happy that my books were loved by so many children around the world. A few years later, in 1973, I wrote a special book just for grown-ups called 'The Grammar of Fantasy'. I wanted to teach parents and teachers how to play with words and ideas so they could help children make up their own amazing stories, too.

I spent my life playing with words and making up new worlds, and I loved every minute of it. I hoped to show everyone that fantasy and imagination are important for learning and growing. I lived to be 59 years old. Even though I am no longer here, my stories like 'The Adventures of Cipollino' are still read by children all over the world. I hope they encourage you to always ask 'what if?' and to use your own amazing imagination to create wonderful new things.
