A Storyteller's Imagination: The Story of Gianni Rodari

Hello. My name is Gianni Rodari. I come from a beautiful place called Italy. Ever since I was a little boy, my head was filled with wonderful, wiggly, and giggly ideas. I loved to play with words and imagine silly things. I thought about a palace made of ice cream or a man made of butter. It was so much fun to think of new things.

I decided to turn my daydreams into stories for children just like you. I wrote about a brave little onion boy named Cipollino who had big adventures with his fruit and vegetable friends. I also told stories over the telephone. One was about a girl who fell in the rain and was made of candy. My stories were full of surprises because I believed imagination is the most fun toy in the world.

In 1970, I received a very special prize for my books. I lived to be 59 years old, and my stories traveled all around the world. Today, children still read my books and remember that the best adventures start with a little bit of imagination.
