The story

Henry Hudson: A Voyage into the Unknown

Hello, I am Henry Hudson. I was an English explorer who lived a very long time ago. I was born around the year 1565. Ever since I was a boy, I loved the sea and the feeling of adventure. I would spend hours looking at maps, tracing the lines of distant coasts with my finger and imagining what treasures they held. My biggest dream was to discover something no one had ever found before: a new, faster way to sail to the amazing lands of Asia by sailing north. I wanted to chart a new path across the top of the world for ships to follow.

My first big voyage started in the year 1607. I sailed for an English company, and my goal was to go north, right over the top of the world. It was an exciting but very difficult journey. As we sailed farther north, the air became freezing cold and the sea filled with ice. Soon, we were met with giant walls of ice that blocked our path like great white mountains. My ship and my crew were brave, but we could not get through the thick ice. It was a very brave attempt, but we had to turn our ship around and sail back home to England.

Two years later, in 1609, I went on another adventure, but this time I sailed for a Dutch company. My ship was a sturdy little vessel called the Half Moon. We sailed west across the great Atlantic Ocean and arrived in North America. There, I discovered a huge, beautiful river. I was so excited. I hoped this wide river might be the secret passage to the Pacific Ocean that I was searching for. I sailed up the river for many days, exploring the new lands around it. It did not lead to Asia, but it was a wonderful discovery. Today, people call that special place the Hudson River, and they named it after me.

My final voyage began in 1610. This time, I was sailing on a ship named the Discovery. We sailed far to the north and west and entered a gigantic bay. It was so big that it felt like an endless sea. This huge body of water is now called Hudson Bay. As we explored, winter came upon us suddenly. Our ship got stuck in the thick ice, and we could not move. We had to spend the whole long, cold winter there. My crew grew very scared and unhappy. They were not used to the harsh cold and missed their homes.

In the spring of 1611, when the ice finally began to break, my crew decided they wanted to go home without me. They put me, my son John, and a few loyal crew members into a small boat and left us in the giant bay. No one ever found out what happened to us after that day. But my story didn't end there. The maps I made and the places I discovered helped many other explorers who came after me. Today, I am remembered with the great Hudson River, the Hudson Strait, and the giant Hudson Bay, which are all named in my honor.
