The Story of Humphry Davy

Hello there! My name is Humphry Davy. When I was a little boy, I lived near the sea in a place called Cornwall, in England. I loved to explore! I would look at the sparkly rocks on the beach and watch the fizzy waves crash on the shore. I always asked questions like, 'What is this made of?' and 'How does that work?' I loved mixing things together to see what would happen. It was like doing magic tricks, but it was really science!

Some of my friends were coal miners. They worked deep underground where it was very dark. They had to use candles, but sometimes the candle flames would make a gas in the mine go BOOM! It was very dangerous. I felt so sad for them and wanted to help. So, I put my thinking cap on and invented a special lantern. My lamp had a little screen around the flame that kept the gas from exploding. It was a safety lamp! Now the miners could see in the dark and be safe.

Making that lamp was one of my favorite things, but I also discovered many new things about the world in my science laboratory. I lived to be 50 years old, and I spent my life asking questions and finding answers. I am happy that my lamp, which people called the 'Davy Lamp,' kept so many people safe. I hope my story reminds you to always be curious and use your bright ideas to help others.
