Just want Igor Sikorsky?
Hello! My name is Igor Sikorsky. Ever since I was a little boy, I dreamed of flying high in the sky like a bird. My mom told me wonderful stories about flying machines, and I decided I would build one myself. I started by making a tiny toy helicopter. It was powered by a rubber band. Whoosh! It flew right up to the ceiling!
When I grew up, I kept building. First, I made giant airplanes with four engines. They were some of the biggest in the world at the time! But I still had my favorite dream. I wanted to build a machine that could lift straight up into the air, like a dragonfly. I called it a helicopter. After lots of hard work, I built one that really worked! In the year 1939, I flew in my special helicopter, the VS-300. It could stay still in one spot in the air and fly in any direction. It was amazing!
I lived to be 83 years old, and I spent my life making my dreams fly. Today, the helicopters I helped invent do so many important jobs. They rescue people from high mountains and stormy seas. They also help doctors get to people who need them very quickly. I am so happy that my dream of a 'whirlybird' helps so many people all around the world.
