James Hutton: The Man Who Found Earth's Story

Hello! My name is James Hutton. I was born a very long time ago, in the year 1726. I lived in a beautiful place called Scotland. When I was a boy, I loved to explore outside. I looked at the tall green hills and the little streams that splashed and played. My very favorite things to look at were rocks. I thought rocks were so interesting.

I looked at big cliffs and saw that the rocks were in lines, like a big stack of pancakes. This gave me a very big idea. I saw how wind and rain changed the land and moved the dirt around. I thought that the same thing must have happened a long, long, long time ago. This meant that our Earth was super-duper old! It was much older than anyone thought. I shared my big ideas with people around the year 1785.

My ideas helped other scientists learn about our amazing planet. I lived to be 70 years old, and my life ended in the year 1797. Today, people remember me as the 'Father of Modern Geology'. That just means I helped everyone see that the Earth has a wonderful, long story to tell. You can read its story in the rocks all around you.
