Just want Jan Brzechwa?
Hello, my name is Jan Brzechwa, and I am a Polish poet known for the magical and funny stories I wrote for children. But that was not the name I was given at birth. I was born Jan Wiktor Lesman on August 15th, 1898, in a town called Zhmerinka, which at the time was part of the Russian Empire. Words were a big part of my family’s world. My cousin, Bolesław Leśmian, was a well-known poet, and his incredible ability to weave words into beautiful verses was a great inspiration to me. From a young age, I was fascinated by the rhythm and music of language, and I loved creating my own rhymes. His work showed me that words could be used not just to say things, but to paint pictures and create entire worlds, sparking my lifelong passion for poetry.
Even though my heart was filled with poetry, I knew I needed a practical profession. In the early 1920s, I moved to Warsaw and enrolled at Warsaw University to study law. It was a serious and demanding field, very different from the playful world of rhymes and verses I loved. I graduated in 1924 and began my career as a lawyer. I specialized in a very specific area called copyright law, which involves protecting the rights of artists, writers, and musicians to own their creative work. To keep my two passions separate, I decided to write under a pen name. I chose 'Brzechwa,' a Polish word for the feathered part of an arrow that helps it fly straight and true. In this way, I lived a kind of double life: by day, I was Jan Wiktor Lesman, the serious lawyer, and by night, I was Jan Brzechwa, the playful poet.

For many years, my poetry was mostly for adults, but in the late 1930s, I discovered the immense joy of writing for children. I realized that my love for wordplay, funny sounds, and silly situations was perfectly suited for young readers. In 1938, I published one of my first books of poems for children, titled 'Tańcowała igła z nitką,' which translates to 'The Needle and Thread Danced.' The very next year, in 1939, I followed it with another collection called 'Kaczka Dziwaczka,' or 'The Weird Duck.' These books were filled with characters that were memorable and funny, and I took great pleasure in creating rhymes that would make children laugh out loud. I found that writing for children allowed me to be my most creative and imaginative self, building worlds where anything was possible.
Just as I was finding my voice as a children's author, the world was plunged into darkness. The years of World War II, from 1939 to 1945, were a frightening and difficult time to be living in Warsaw. The city I knew was filled with sadness and uncertainty. However, I firmly believed that even in the darkest of times, imagination could be a powerful source of light and hope. It was during this period that I wrote my most famous work, 'Akademia Pana Kleksa,' or 'Mr. Inkblot's Academy.' I dreamed up a magical school run by an eccentric headmaster, a place filled with wonder, adventure, and endless possibilities. Creating this story was my personal way of escaping the harsh reality around me and holding onto the belief that goodness and magic still existed in the world. The book couldn't be published during the war, but it finally reached readers in 1946, becoming a symbol of hope for a new generation.
After the war, I continued my work as both a lawyer and a writer, creating many more books and poems that found their way into the hearts of children and adults across Poland. I lived to be 67 years old. My stories, especially 'Mr. Inkblot's Academy,' have been passed down from parents to their children for generations. I am remembered for bringing humor, imagination, and the simple joy of a good story to countless readers. It fills me with happiness to know that my magical worlds continue to inspire children to laugh, dream, and believe in the power of their own creativity.
