The story

Jang Yeong-sil

Hello! My name is Jang Yeong-sil. I was born around the year 1390 in a place called Dongnae, which is part of modern-day Busan in Korea. In the Joseon Dynasty, the time I lived in, a person's life was often decided by their family's social status. My mother was a 'gisaeng,' a female entertainer, which meant I was born into the lowest social class, the 'cheonmin.' People didn't expect much from someone like me. But from a very young age, I was fascinated by how things worked. I didn't just see a tool; I saw all the pieces that made it move. I loved taking things apart and putting them back together, figuring out how to make them better. My hands were always busy building, fixing, and creating. This natural talent for engineering and invention would change my life forever.

As I grew older, my reputation as a clever and skilled craftsman spread. Eventually, word of my abilities reached the royal palace in the capital city of Hanyang, now known as Seoul. It caught the attention of our wise ruler, King Sejong the Great. King Sejong was a remarkable leader who believed that science and technology were the keys to a strong and prosperous nation. He wanted to gather the brightest minds in the kingdom to help him, no matter their social background. In the year 1421, he did something almost unheard of: he summoned me, a man from the cheonmin class, to work for him in the palace. It was the greatest honor of my life. The King saw my potential and gave me a chance to use my skills for the good of our country.

King Sejong knew that to create the best inventions, we first had to learn from others. Soon after I arrived at the palace in 1421, he sent me on a very important trip to China. My mission was to study their advanced astronomical instruments and scientific knowledge. It was an incredible journey where I saw amazing devices for tracking the stars and measuring time. I absorbed everything I could, making detailed notes and sketches. When I returned to Joseon, I was filled with new ideas. King Sejong was pleased and officially appointed me as a government official in the royal palace. It was a dream come true. I finally had the resources and support to turn my ideas into reality.

Working in the palace, I poured all my energy into inventing. One of my proudest achievements was the 'Jagyeokru,' an amazing automatic water clock, which I completed in 1434. It was much more than just a clock; it was a complex machine with figures of people and animals that would pop out and strike bells and gongs to announce the time automatically. Everyone in the palace was amazed! I also created instruments to study the stars and the sky. But perhaps my most important invention came in 1441. It was called the 'Cheugugi,' and it was the world's first standardized rain gauge. Before this, it was hard to know exactly how much rain had fallen. My simple but effective device allowed the government to accurately measure rainfall across the country, which was incredibly important for farming and preventing floods. I also invented a water gauge to measure river levels, further helping our farmers.

For many years, I served King Sejong and my country with pride. However, my time in the palace came to a sudden and unfortunate end. In 1442, I was in charge of building a new, ornate royal carriage, called a 'gama,' for the king. During a royal trip, the carriage broke. Because I had overseen its construction, I was held responsible for the failure. This was a very serious matter. I was dismissed from my official post and, for a time, put in prison. It was a difficult and sad end to my career as a royal inventor.

After the carriage incident in 1442, the official records about my life fall silent. Though my career at court ended unexpectedly, I am proud of what I was able to accomplish. I started life with very little, but with curiosity and hard work, I was able to create things that helped my people and advanced the science of my time. Today, my inventions like the automatic water clock and the rain gauge are remembered as some of the greatest scientific achievements of the Joseon Dynasty. I am honored that people still tell my story as proof that a person's talent and determination are more important than the circumstances of their birth.
