The story

Sejong the Great: A King's Alphabet

Hello! My name is Sejong, and a long time ago, I was a king in a wonderful land called Korea. I loved my people very much. I also loved to read big, heavy books. Reading helped me learn so many amazing things, and I wanted to share that magic with everyone in my kingdom.

Back in my time, around the year 1443, reading and writing were very tricky. The letters were so complicated that most people couldn't learn them. This made me sad. I believed everyone, no matter if they were a farmer or a queen, should be able to write their name and share their stories. So, I gathered my smartest friends, and together we invented a brand-new alphabet called Hangul. We made the letters with simple lines, circles, and squares so they would be super easy to learn!

Soon, everyone was learning to read and write! I also helped my people in other ways. We invented a special bowl to measure the rain, which helped our farmers grow more yummy food for everyone to eat. I lived to be 53 years old, and I was so happy to see my people learning and growing. Today, people in Korea still use the easy alphabet I helped create, and it makes me proud to know my work is still helping people share their wonderful ideas.
