Just want Sejong the Great?
Hello! My name is Sejong, and I was a king in Korea a long time ago. I was born on May 15th, 1397. When I was a boy, I wasn't expected to be king, but I loved to learn. I would spend my days reading every book I could get my hands on, learning about history, science, and how to care for people.
In the year 1418, I became the king. I wanted to be a great ruler and help everyone in my kingdom. But I noticed a big problem. At that time, writing in Korean was very, very difficult. The letters were complicated, and most people couldn't learn how to read or write. This made me sad because I wanted everyone to be able to share their ideas and stories.
I had an idea! What if we created a brand new alphabet just for the Korean language? I wanted one that was so simple, anyone could learn it. I gathered my smartest scholars, and we worked together for years. In 1446, we shared our creation with the world. We called it 'Hunminjeongeum,' which means 'The Correct Sounds for the Instruction of the People.' The shapes of the letters were designed to look like the shape your mouth and tongue make when you say the sound. It was a big hit!
Creating an alphabet wasn't my only project! I also loved science and inventing things. I helped create one of the world's first rain gauges. This was a special tool that helped our farmers measure how much rain had fallen, so they would know the best time to plant their crops.
I tried my best to be a good king for my people. I lived to be 52 years old. Today, the alphabet I helped create is called Hangul, and it is still used all across Korea. I am remembered as 'Sejong the Great' because I believed that learning and knowledge should be for everyone, and I am so happy my ideas still help people today.
