Just want King Taejo?
Hello! My name is Wang Geon, but you might know me by the name I took later in life, King Taejo. I was born a very long time ago, on January 31st, 877, in a busy trading town called Songak. My family were merchants, which meant we traveled and traded goods with people from far away places. This was a wonderful way to grow up. From watching my family, I learned how to be a strong leader and how to cooperate with many different kinds of people. I didn't know it then, but these skills would become very important and help me for my entire life. My childhood in a bustling town prepared me for a future I could have never imagined.
When I was a young man, the land I loved was in turmoil. It was divided into three separate kingdoms, and they were constantly fighting for control. It was a difficult time for everyone. Around the year 895, I knew I had to do something to help bring peace, so I decided to join the army of a powerful leader named Gung Ye. I became a naval commander, leading ships and soldiers in battles on the sea. I worked hard and was able to win many important victories for him. People began to notice my leadership skills and my successes on the battlefield. Gung Ye saw my dedication, and in the year 913, he honored me by making me his prime minister. It was a great responsibility, and I did my best to serve him and help bring peace to the land.
Unfortunately, the power Gung Ye had began to change him for the worse. He became a cruel and suspicious ruler, and the people who once supported him were now very unhappy and afraid. My fellow generals and I knew that this could not continue. In the year 918, they came to me with a serious request. They asked me to become their new king and lead them. I knew that accepting this would change my life forever, but I also knew it was the right thing to do for the people. I accepted the great responsibility. I overthrew Gung Ye and started a brand new dynasty. I named it Goryeo, in honor of the great ancient kingdom of Goguryeo, to show everyone my dream of building a nation that was just as strong and respected.
King Taejo: The Founder of Goryeo

I overthrew Gung Ye and started a brand new dynasty. I named it Goryeo, in honor of the great ancient kingdom of Goguryeo, to show everyone my dream of building a nation that was just as strong and respected.
My biggest dream was to unite the entire peninsula and finally stop all the fighting between the kingdoms. This was not an easy task, and it took many years of patience and hard work. I wanted to build a future where everyone could live in peace. The kingdom of Silla saw that we could achieve this together, and in the year 935, its leaders peacefully surrendered to me, joining Goryeo. The last kingdom, Later Baekje, continued to fight. In 936, after a final, decisive battle, I defeated them. For the first time in many, many years, the land was one nation under one ruler. To show that we were all one people now, I made sure to welcome everyone from the other kingdoms, treating them with kindness and respect instead of as my enemies.
I spent the rest of my reign working to build a strong and stable kingdom for all my people. To make sure the kingdom would remain fair and just long after I was gone, I wrote down my most important advice for all the future kings of Goryeo. This guide was called the 'Ten Injunctions.' I wanted to help them remember to be good and thoughtful rulers. I lived to be 66 years old and passed away in the year 943. The Goryeo dynasty that I created lasted for nearly 500 years, and it is from its name that the modern name 'Korea' comes. I am remembered as the king who brought the Korean people together to form one unified nation.
