The story

Johannes Vermeer: Painter of Light

Hello! My name is Johannes Vermeer, and I was a painter who lived a very long time ago. I was born in 1632 in a beautiful town called Delft, in a country we now call the Netherlands. My father was an art dealer, which means he bought and sold paintings. Because of his job, our house was always filled with amazing art. Seeing all those beautiful pictures every day made me fall in love with art, and I knew I wanted to be a painter when I grew up.

When I became a man, I followed my dream and became a professional painter. In 1653, I was invited to join the special painters' group in Delft, which was a very proud moment for me. I married my dear wife, Catharina, and we had a very big and happy family with many children. Our home was busy, but I had a special room that was my studio. My favorite thing to study and paint was light. I loved to watch how the sun would shine through a window, lighting up a room and making everything inside seem to glow. I tried to put that quiet, magical feeling into every painting I made.

I was not an artist who painted hundreds and hundreds of pictures. I worked very slowly and with great care because I wanted every single detail to be just right. I especially loved using bright, beautiful colors in my work. My favorite was a brilliant blue color that came from a special, expensive stone. Most of my paintings show people doing simple things in their homes, like a woman pouring milk from a jug or another person quietly reading a letter by a window. My most famous painting is probably one you have seen. It is called 'Girl with a Pearl Earring,' and it shows a young woman looking right at you with a big, shiny pearl earring.

Later in my life, things became difficult for my family and me. I lived to be 43 years old. For almost two hundred years after I was gone, most people forgot about me and my art. But then, art lovers rediscovered my paintings and saw how special they were. Today, my paintings are famous all over the world. People travel to museums just to see the peaceful, sunlit rooms I painted so long ago. It makes me happy to know that my art still brings a feeling of peace and wonder to everyone who sees it.
