John Smith: An American Explorer
Hello! My name is John Smith, and I loved going on big adventures. A long, long time ago, in the year 1606, I sailed on a very tall ship. The ship was made of wood, and my friends and I went across the giant, blue ocean. The wind blew into our big sails and pushed our ship through the water. We watched the waves splash for many days. We were looking for a new place to call home.
After a long time on the water, we finally saw land! In the year 1607, we started to build our new town. We called it Jamestown. Building a town was hard work! We all had to help build houses and find food to eat. I made a very important rule to make sure everyone helped. The rule was, 'If you want to eat, you have to help!' We all worked together like a big team, and we made our new home safe and strong.
I loved to explore our new home. I walked through the big green forests and paddled my boat down the rivers. I met the people who already lived there, the Native Americans, and we learned many things from each other. I drew pictures of all the places I saw. These pictures were called maps! My maps helped other explorers find their way, too. I had so many adventures, and I wrote them all down in books so everyone could learn about this new world.
I lived a long life full of adventure. My stories and my maps helped many people who came after me learn about the new lands in America. It is always exciting to explore new places and share what you find with the world.
