The story

José de San Martín: A Hero for Freedom

Hello! My name is José de San Martín. I was born a very long time ago, on February 25th, 1778. My home was a town called Yapeyú, which is in a country we now call Argentina. Even when I was a little boy, I had a big dream. I wanted to grow up to be a soldier so I could help people and keep them safe.

When I was still a boy, my family and I moved far away, all the way across the big ocean to a country called Spain. It was there, in Spain, that I joined the army. I started learning how to be a soldier when I was young. I worked very hard to become a brave soldier and a good leader for others. I always believed that it was very important to fight for freedom, so that people could live happily and make their own choices.

I had a very special dream for my home in South America. Back then, the country of Spain ruled over many countries there, and I wanted them to be free. I believed they should be able to choose their own leaders and make their own rules. So, in the year 1812, I sailed all the way back to South America to help make this dream come true. I gathered a group of very brave soldiers, and we called ourselves the Army of the Andes.

Now I will tell you about one of the most exciting parts of my story. In 1817, I led my Army of the Andes on a great adventure across the giant, snowy Andes Mountains. The mountains were so high that they touched the clouds, and it was very, very cold. My soldiers were so brave, and so were the mules that helped us carry everything we needed. It was a very dangerous journey, but we made it. The Spanish army was very surprised to see us, and our surprise plan helped us win a big battle to help free the country of Chile.

After we helped the people of Chile, I knew my job was not done yet. There were other countries that needed help. So, I sailed with my soldiers to another country called Peru to help them become free, too. While I was there, I met another great leader named Simón Bolívar. He was also fighting for freedom for the people of South America. We both knew that if we worked together, our dream of a free South America could finally come true.

When the wars for freedom were over, I moved back to Europe to live a quiet life with my family. I lived to be 72 years old. Today, if you visit the countries of Argentina, Chile, and Peru, you will see that people remember me. They think of me as a hero who helped them win their freedom. They call me one of their great liberators, which means someone who helps set others free. I am so proud that I could help my people build their own countries where they could live in peace.
