Just want José Martí?
Hello! My name is José Martí. I was born on a beautiful, sunny island called Cuba on January 28th, 1853. I loved my home very much. The sunshine was warm and the flowers were so bright. More than anything else, I loved words! I loved to read books and write stories. I also loved to write pretty poems that sounded like happy songs.
When I was a boy, my home of Cuba was not a free country. This made me feel sad. I had a very big idea in my heart. I believed that everyone should be free and that everyone should be treated with kindness. I used my words to tell everyone about this big idea. I wrote in newspapers and in books. I even made a special magazine just for children! I wanted all the children to learn how to be good, smart, and free.
I spent my whole life working for my big dream of a free Cuba. I traveled to many different places, always writing and speaking about freedom for my home. My work helped start the Cuban War of Independence in the year 1895. I lived to be 42 years old. Today, the people in Cuba remember me as a national hero. They sing songs with the words from my poems and tell stories about how I used my words to help everyone. My dream of freedom and kindness is my gift to the world.
