Just want Joseph Banks?
Hello! My name is Joseph Banks, and I want to tell you my story. I was born in London, England, on February 13th, 1743. When I was a boy, I loved playing outside more than anything. While other children were inside reading, I was exploring fields and forests, fascinated by all the different flowers, trees, and plants. I knew right away that I wanted to spend my life learning about the amazing world of botany, which is the special name for the study of plants.
As I grew up, I dreamed of seeing plants from all over the globe. In 1768, my dream came true! I was invited to join my friend, Captain James Cook, on a fantastic sailing adventure on a big ship called HMS Endeavour. I was so excited that I brought my own team of scientists and artists to help me. For three whole years, we sailed across huge oceans to faraway lands. We visited tropical islands like Tahiti and the beautiful shores of New Zealand. Then, in 1770, we reached a giant, mysterious continent: Australia! It was filled with plants and animals no one from my country had ever seen. We found so many new flowers and trees that we named the place we landed 'Botany Bay.' I even had a fuzzy, colorful plant named after me—the Banksia!
When we finally returned home to England in 1771, we were heroes! We brought back thousands of dried plants and incredible drawings of everything we had seen. People were amazed by the kangaroos, colorful birds, and strange flowers from the other side of the world. Because of my adventures, I was asked to be the president of a very important science club called the Royal Society. I also helped the king make his special gardens, called Kew Gardens, a home for amazing plants from every corner of the earth.

I lived a long and exciting life, full of adventure and discovery, and I lived to be 77 years old. Today, people remember me for the incredible journey I took and for all the new plants I introduced to the world. My work helped everyone understand just how big and wonderful our planet is, and the beautiful Banksia flower still reminds people of my amazing voyage.
