The story

Junko Tabei: The Mountain Climber

Hello! My name is Junko Tabei. When I was a little girl growing up in Japan, my favorite thing to do was climb. Some people thought I was too small and not very strong, but when I saw a mountain, I just wanted to get to the top! The mountains were like a giant, beautiful playground for me. I loved the fresh, cool air and seeing the world get smaller and smaller below me.

I dreamed of climbing the biggest mountains in the world. The tallest one of all is named Mount Everest. It is so high that its top is covered in snow and ice all year round! In the year 1975, I went with a team of other women to climb it. It was very hard work, and we had to be very brave. On May 16th, I took the last few steps and stood on the very top of the world! I was the first woman ever to do that. I felt so happy and proud, looking out at the clouds below me.

Climbing Mount Everest was just the beginning of my adventures. I kept climbing and became the first woman to climb the tallest mountain on every continent! I wanted to show everyone, especially girls, that they could achieve their biggest dreams. I lived to be 77 years old, and I spent my whole life exploring our amazing planet. I hope my story helps you remember that no mountain is too high to climb if you keep trying your best.
