Just want Karl von Drais?
Hello, my name is Karl von Drais, and I would like to tell you my story. I was born a very long time ago, on April 29th, 1785, in a German city called Karlsruhe. Even when I was a young boy, I was always curious about how things worked. I loved to spend my time tinkering with tools and trying to build new machines. I would look at a clock or a cart and wonder how I could make it better. This curiosity about building things stayed with me my whole life and led me to a very important invention.
My biggest idea came to me because of a very big problem. In the year 1816, a huge volcano named Mount Tambora erupted on an island far away. The ash from the volcano blocked out the sun and made the weather around the world very cold. People called it the 'Year Without a Summer.' Because it was so cold, the crops that farmers grew could not survive. This was a big problem because there was not enough food for people, and there was also not enough food for the horses. Back then, horses were what people used to travel from one town to another. Without enough food, the horses became weak, and it was hard for people to get around. I knew there had to be a better way.
I got to work in my shop, and in 1817, I created a machine to help people travel without needing a horse. I called it a 'Laufmaschine,' which means 'running machine' in German. It had a simple wooden frame with two wheels, one in the front and one in the back. I added a seat to sit on and handlebars so you could steer the front wheel. There were no pedals like you see on bikes today. To make it go, you had to sit on the seat and push off the ground with your feet, almost like you were running. On June 12th, 1817, I took it for its first long ride, and it was a great success. Soon, people started calling my invention the 'Draisine' after me, and it became the very first version of a bicycle.

My running machine was just the start of a wonderful new way to travel. I lived to be 66 years old, and over the years, other clever inventors looked at my idea and made it even better. They added pedals to make it easier to push, and then they added chains to connect the pedals to the back wheel. Slowly, my simple wooden machine turned into the amazing bicycle that people all over the world ride today. I am so happy that my idea helped people discover the joy of exploring their world on two wheels, powered only by themselves.
