The story

Karl von Drais: The Man Who Invented the First Bicycle

Hello! My name is Karl von Drais. I was born on April 29th, 1785, in a city called Karlsruhe in Germany. Even as a young boy, my head was always buzzing with ideas. While my father was a respected judge, I was much more interested in science, mathematics, and figuring out how things worked. To learn more, I went to the University of Heidelberg to study these subjects. After I finished my studies, I became a forester, which meant I spent a lot of my time working in nature. But my true passion was always inventing machines that could help people with their daily lives.

In 1816, something very strange happened all over the world. A huge volcano named Mount Tambora erupted on the other side of the planet. It shot so much ash into the sky that it began to block the sun's light and warmth. This caused what people called the 'Year Without a Summer' in Europe. It was cold, crops in the fields wouldn't grow, and there wasn't enough food for people or animals. Because there were no oats to feed them, many horses, which were the main way people traveled back then, starved. I saw how difficult it was for everyone to get around and thought, 'There must be a way for people to travel without needing a horse!'.

I got to work in my workshop, and in 1817, I finally created my invention. I called it the 'Laufmaschine,' which means 'running machine' in German. It had two wooden wheels placed one behind the other, and they were connected by a wooden frame that had a seat on top. To help guide it, I added a handlebar for steering. But you might notice something was missing—there were no pedals! To make my machine go, you had to push your feet against the ground, almost like you were running while sitting down. On June 12th, 1817, I took it for its first big ride. I traveled about nine miles in less than an hour, which was even faster than a mail coach! People who saw it were amazed. In 1818, I received a special patent for my invention, and soon people in France and England were calling it the 'Draisine' or the 'hobby-horse'.

My running machine wasn't my only idea. I was always thinking of new things to create. I also invented an early type of typewriter and a machine for grinding meat. But being an inventor wasn't always easy. Some people made fun of my running machine, thinking it looked silly and was not a serious way to travel. As I got older, I also faced difficult times because of my political ideas, which were not popular at the time, and life became a struggle for me. Still, I never stopped believing in the power of new ideas to change the world for the better.

I lived to be 66 years old. Although my running machine didn't have pedals, it was a very important first step in the history of transportation. I showed the world that it was possible for a person to balance on two wheels. Other inventors later took my idea and improved it by adding pedals, chains, and rubber tires, which eventually created the modern bicycle you see everywhere today. So, the next time you hop on a bike and feel the wind in your hair, you can remember me and my funny-looking 'Laufmaschine' that started it all.
