The story

Luigi Galvani: The Spark of Life

Hello! My name is Luigi Galvani. I was born in a beautiful city called Bologna, in Italy, on September 9th, 1737. Even as a little boy, I was very curious. I loved learning how things worked, especially the most amazing machine of all: the human body! I dreamed of becoming a doctor so I could help people and understand the body's secrets.

I went to the University of Bologna to make my dream come true. I studied very hard and became a doctor. I loved my work so much that in 1762, I became a professor there, teaching other students all about anatomy, which is the study of the body. I had a wonderful wife named Lucia, who was a scientist too. She often helped me with my experiments in our laboratory.

One day, around the year 1780, something amazing happened in my lab. I was studying a frog while a machine nearby was making electric sparks. When my assistant touched the frog's leg with a metal knife, its leg suddenly twitched and kicked, just as if it were alive! I was so surprised and wondered if electricity was the reason. Later, during a thunderstorm, I hung some frog legs from a metal hook on our iron balcony. When lightning flashed in the sky, the legs twitched again! It looked like magic, but I knew it was science.

After many tests, I had a big idea. I thought that animals had a special kind of electricity inside them, which I called 'animal electricity.' I believed this electricity flowed through nerves to make muscles move. In 1791, I wrote a book about my discovery so other scientists could learn about it. Not everyone agreed with me, but my work started a big conversation that led to even more amazing discoveries about electricity.

I lived to be 61 years old and passed away in 1798. My discovery about 'animal electricity' was just the beginning. It inspired another scientist, Alessandro Volta, to invent the very first battery! Today, people remember me for discovering that our bodies use electricity to move, think, and feel. My curiosity about a little frog's twitching leg helped spark a whole new field of science called bioelectricity.
