The story

Marcus Junius Brutus: A Story from Ancient Rome

Hello! My name is Marcus Junius Brutus, and I lived in a very famous city called Rome a long, long time ago. I was born in the year 85 BCE. Rome was the center of a huge Republic, which meant that the people helped choose their leaders instead of having a king. I was a senator, which was a very important job. My friends and I would meet in a big building called the Senate House to make laws and decisions to help everyone in Rome. I was very proud of my family. One of my ancestors, a man named Lucius Junius Brutus, had helped start the Roman Republic hundreds of years before I was born, all the way back in 509 BCE. I believed it was my special duty to protect it.

I had a very famous and powerful friend named Julius Caesar. He was a brave general who won many battles for Rome, and many people loved him for it. He was very good at leading, but he became more and more powerful as time went on. In the year 44 BCE, he was made 'dictator for life'. This meant he could be the boss of Rome forever, with nobody else having a say. This worried me and many other senators very much. We believed that no single person should have all the power. The whole point of our Republic was to share power so that no one could ever become a king.

I had to make a very hard choice. Should I be loyal to my friend, Caesar, or should I be loyal to the Roman Republic that I loved so much? After thinking about it for a long time, I believed that Caesar was going to end the Republic and rule as a king. So, I joined a group of other senators who felt the same way I did. We decided that we had to stop him to protect Rome's freedom. On a day called the Ides of March, which was March 15th in the year 44 BCE, we carried out our plan in the Senate House.

What we did did not fix everything like we had hoped. Instead, it started another big civil war in Rome. I led an army to fight for the Republic, but we lost the final battle in a place called Philippi in 42 BCE. I lived to be about 43 years old. For thousands of years, people have told my story and debated my choice. Was I a hero who saved the Republic, or did I betray my friend? My story makes people think about what it means to be a good friend, what it means to be a good citizen, and what you should do when you believe something is not right.
