The story

Maria Sibylla Merian: The Girl Who Painted Bugs

Hello! My name is Maria Sibylla Merian. I was born a very long time ago in Germany, in the year 1647. When I was a little girl, I loved two things more than anything: painting and bugs! While some people thought creepy crawlies were yucky, I thought they were beautiful. I would go into my garden and find fuzzy caterpillars munching on leaves and pretty flowers reaching for the sun. I would bring them inside and watch them for hours.

I kept my little caterpillar friends in boxes and fed them fresh leaves every day. And then, I discovered a magical secret! I watched a caterpillar wrap itself up in a little blanket, like it was going to sleep. I waited and waited, and one day, it wiggled out, but it wasn't a caterpillar anymore! It was a beautiful butterfly with colorful wings. I was so excited that I painted every single step to show everyone the amazing change.

When I grew up, I got on a big boat and sailed to a jungle far away called Suriname to find even more amazing bugs to paint. I painted bright blue butterflies and beetles that shined like jewels. I lived to be 69 years old and passed away in the year 1717. I spent my life sharing the secret world of insects. Today, people all over the world can still see my paintings and learn that even the tiniest creatures are wonderful.
